Education - GroinRehab Courses
Anthony Hogan
B.App.Sc (Physio)., M.App.Sc (Manip Physio)., B.Sc (Hons)
Anthony Hogan is a unique sports medicine clinician because he has combined his
Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy titles with a recent undergraduate
degree in Psychology. His sports medicine career began at the South Australian
Sports Medicine Centre nearly 20 years ago. In 1992, he collaborated with Dr
Greg Lovell to develop a new conservative rehabilitation program for athletic
groin pain (commonly referred to as osteitis pubis). Since then he has continued
to develop and refine the physiotherapy aspects, particularly exercise prescription
and monitoring, of the program. He has been invited to make many presentations
for Sports Physiotherapy Australia and to sports medicine conferences in Australia,
UK and Denmark.
Anthony refined his manual therapy and clinical reasoning skills whilst
completing a Masters at the University of South Australia and went on to teach
on this highly respected Sports and Manipulative Physiotherapy program between
1995 and 2003. For the past 5 years he has worked as groin injury consultant
for professional football clubs in the UK and Australia. This has enabled him
to develop a comprehensive understanding of the serious amateur, semi-professional,
and professional footballer/athlete. He was also able to be involved in clinical
research, the results of which are being prepared for publication.
GroinRehab Introduction
It is widely accepted that athletic groin pain is poorly understood and for this,
and many other reasons, most clinicians report that they find it difficult
to manage effectively. The GroinRehab presentations do not attempt to explain
this situation, instead they present a logical assessment, re-assessment and
management protocol available to the clinician. The presentations emphasise
the use of reliable objective measures based on published and emerging evidence.
A unique method of exercise prescription is presented that can operate independently
of diagnostic difficulties and negates the need to learn recipes for specific
conditions.
The GroinRehab courses have been developed by a very experienced clinician
with an extensive background in post-graduate teaching. He has a genuine interest
in the effective transfer of knowledge and is continually seeking better ways
to explain a difficult clinical problem.
GroinRehab Fundamentals
The GroinRehab Fundamentals series of presentations consists of an initial GroinAssess
presentation followed by 3 GroinRehab presentations. It is necessary to participate
in a GroinAssess presentation before attending any (or all) the GroinRehab
presentations.
Each GroinRehab presentation has > 50
% practical component
GroinRehab Fundamentals is available to physiotherapists, sports therapists
etc

Objectives of GroinAssess
To introduce a self assessment tool that will;
- assist participants to reflect on their understanding of the
clinical anatomy and biomechanics of the hip and groin
- identify strategies that can be used to address knowledge deficits or
threats to confidence
- to emphasise the importance of a medical assessment for long-standing
groin pain
- to review the subjective examination of the hip and groin
- to demonstrate a standard physical examination of the hip and
groin including the use of reliable objective measures.
- to present the role of groin pain provocation (and pain modification)
tests in the clinical reasoning process used by GroinRehab
- to review the standard re-assessment procedure used to assess
response to therapy, stage rehabilitation and monitor progress
- to summarise the GroinRehab template used in GroinRehab
presentations

Summary and Questions
|
Objectives of 3 GroinRehab presentations
The presenter will facilitate participants to:
- continue their review of the clinical anatomy and biomechanics
of the hip and groin
- identify key aspects of the subjective and objective examination specific
to the topic
- improve their therapy options (manual therapy, soft tissue techniques
etc)
- understand the model used by GroinRehab for effective exercise
prescription
- understand the benefits of reassessment process including
the use of objective
- measures to demonstrate the response to therapy, load management
and exercise
- problem solve common difficulties that arise in rehabilitation
of athletic groin pain
Summary of GroinRehab Fundamentals
At the conclusion of this series of presentations, participants
- will have been provided with a template for groin injury management
that can be integrated into clinical practice that considers
- clinical anatomy and biomechanics
- the subjective and objective examination of the hip and groin
- published and unpublished research into reliable objective measures
- groin pain provocation (and pain modification) tests
- effective manual therapy, soft tissue therapy, load management and exercise
prescription
- objective monitoring of response to treatment and progress
with rehabilitation
- effective communication with the patient and other clinicians
