Tom Adams, Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist

‘Goal setting gives a focus and drive which helps immensely during rehabilitation. As a physiotherapist my task is to help achieve these goals but I don’t work alone and I believe teamwork is vital for successful treatment. This means working with the patient but also involving other colleagues to give a holistic approach and a quicker, more complete recovery’

A graduate of King’s College London, Tom began his career at a London teaching hospital covering the main rotations before focusing on musculoskeletal physiotherapy. He then moved to New Zealand for a couple of years where he worked in private practice in a sports injury clinic and medical centre. During this time Tom worked closely with local sports clubs and also treated elite level tri-athletes, runners, hockey players and cricketers.

On returning to the UK Tom has continued to work in private practice working within a private hospital before joining the team here at Pure. His work with sports injuries led him to want to further his knowledge and he is now in the final year of post graduate study in Sports & Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary’s, University of London.

‘I have always been obsessed with sport both watching and participating. I’ve played rugby since I was old enough to pick up the ball but have recently retired to focus on my career and to enjoy other active pursuits. I am a keen skier and try to get away for a ski trip as often as possible.  I have been fortunate enough to have spent several weeks skiing with advanced level tuition which was a great experience. During my time in NZ I learnt to scuba dive and still love to, whenever I get the opportunity, although the British waters are a bit cold for my liking. More recently I have taken to mountain biking and am also trying to get to grips with golf but this is proving more difficult than I thought!!

My involvement in sport, through work and participation, has given me a good understanding of the complex demands and challenges that are faced not only when injured but also when striving to improve performance. This knowledge base has helped me greatly when treating my patients from all backgrounds. Goal setting gives a focus and drive which helps immensely during rehabilitation. As a physiotherapist my task is to help achieve these goals but I don’t work alone and I believe teamwork is vital for successful treatment. This means working with the patient but also involving other colleagues to give a holistic approach and a quicker, more complete recovery.

These ideals of goal setting and team work are concepts that are transferable across the board whether you are an elite level athlete, weekend warrior or more sedate in your lifestyle. I love the challenge that my job brings and working towards goals not only keeps the treatment approach focused but also gives huge satisfaction when those goals are achieved. It’s great to see my patients get back to doing what they love, whatever it may be.

Beyond work, study and sport, I like to spend as much time as possible with my growing family but you may also find me relaxing with a beer with friends, or trying to broaden my horizons with my nose in a book!’
