Rebecca Christenson, Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist"Physiotherapy is really about teamwork; working with someone to achieve their aims. It is this part of the job that I find most rewarding." Rebecca has both an Undergraduate Degree and Post-Graduate qualifications in Physiotherapy, which have gained her entry into the MACP (Manipulation Association of Chartered Physiotherapists). She has treated elite athletes across a wide range of sports including Olympic athletes and particularly enjoys working with football, gymnastics and running. She has worked extensively with rowers and has a close relationship with Imperial College Boat Club. She has published research on the Achilles tendon and has a special interest in lower limb overuse injuries. "I first became interested in the treatment of sports injuries at the age of about six when I was a gymnast. I remember being fascinated about how people got their injuries and the fact that they would still train – even with below knee casts on both feet! This grit and determination is a real motivator and demonstrates that you can succeed even when things look bleak; and it has always been my aim to help people achieve their goals. This early interest in medicine has never wavered and I am one of the lucky few who can say that they love their job. Treating athletes is particularly gratifying because I have always enjoyed sports. At the same time, having worked in the NHS I have also treated a diverse group of individuals with varied interests, many of whom were afraid of exercise. Physiotherapy is really about teamwork; working with someone to achieve their aims and it is this part of the job that I find most rewarding. This is true whether the goal is to improve on a personal best, compete at the highest level or simply be able to mow the lawn without pain. The other part of physiotherapy that fascinates me is how medicine is constantly changing. It is a job that always challenges and requires you to keep up to date. I am an enthusiastic and very hardworking person who will always put everything I can into helping my patients. I am also a practical person which was another enticement into the hands on treatment of injuries. Apart from sports, I enjoy languages, travel and DIY. I also quite fancied becoming a car mechanic when I was in junior school – maybe a hobby for the future! My friends and family are extremely important to me."
