“The most important aspect in dealing with patients is spending focused time with them.”

Mike is a Sports Physician and GP who has been involved in treating sports injuries since 1999. Having qualified at Bath University, Mike has been involved with all types of sports, but mainly rugby and athletics. He has worked as a UK Athletics Team Doctor and was the Medical Director for the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham 2003. In rugby he has been Team Doctor to London Irish RFC for the last 4 years and has been involved with England Rugby at every level. Mike has now been the Team Doctor for England ‘A’ and the England 7’s teams since 2003. His primary interests are ankle, knee and shoulder injuries.

“Having played a variety of sports myself, including hockey to an elite level, I was desperate to stay involved with sport and competitors at all levels throughout my working life. Believe it or not, I get as much satisfaction from treating a sports injury as I did when playing sport. The most important aspect in dealing with patients is spending focused time with them. Here at Pure we have the luxury of having enough time to not only diagnose and plan a treatment programme, which may involve a variety of specialist therapists within the team, but also to explain exactly how the injury occurred, how to prevent a recurrence, and how to come out of the episode a wiser, fitter, stronger athlete. The message is generally the same whether you are an elite athlete or a recreational sportsman.

At present, I am developing an interest in on-site ultrasound imaging of musculo-skeletal injuries so that I can actually see the damaged area inside the body with the patient in the clinic. Imaging of this type can aid diagnosis, treatment and injection therapy accuracy if required.

Hence, life is very busy. But I am fortunate to have a supportive wife, Sarah, and daughter, Hannah aged 14. We live in Surrey, which helps me to escape from London to walk the dog in the countryside, and try to stay fit myself with running and golf.
