Dr Lorenzo Masci, Specialist Sports Doctor‘One of the greatest virtues I can bestow is the ability to improve a person’s health and well being by keeping them active”
Lorenzo has always had an interest in sport and activity during school and university having competed in junior elite tennis tournaments. After completing his orthopaedic residency and general practice training in Brisbane, Australia, he moved to Melbourne to start Sports Physician training, which he completed in 2006. Lorenzo has worked with elite teams in rugby league and Australian football and has been involved in the medical care of elite tennis players at the Australian Open Grand Slam in Melbourne, Australia since 2001. He also has a strong research interest having completing a Master in Sports Medicine on stress fractures in the lumbar spine in young athletes. His thesis on pars stress fractures of the lumbar spine in young athletes was awarded a high distinction and his research paper was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2006 titled “The use of the one-legged hyperextension test and magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of active spondylolysis”.
‘Since my general practice days, I was surprised and quite disheartened to see quite a few patients that, for what ever reason, did not want to get better. I feel privileged to work in an area of medicine where the main focus is to enable motivated people to get back to what they enjoy – keeping active and playing sport.
I have an interest in paediatric sports medicine particularly in relation to low back pain and young active individuals. Both in Australia and the United Kingdom, increasing rates of obesity in children and teenagers is seen as a growing public health issue. I feel that my work at Pure Sports Medicine, in enabling young athletes to remain active, will play a small part in tackling this developing health crisis.
My other interests include the management of medical and musculoskeletal problems associated with dance medicine, having worked closely with staged productions such as The Lion King. I have also worked in a hyperbaric diving centre and am certified to perform dive medicals. On those days when I’m not working, you can find me on a tennis court or training for the next fun run – any excuse to enjoy the outdoors.’
