Justin Coulter- Sports Podiatrist

"Every athlete, be it an elite performer or an occasional participant, is an individual and should be approached accordingly. Mechanisms of injury vary even though the diagnosis may be the same; making this an exciting and thought provoking profession to be involved in."

Justin completed his undergraduate training in South Africa in 1995 and continued with postgraduate studies completing a postgraduate BSc honours degree through Brighton University in 1998. He has subsequently completed a Masters level postgraduate diploma in Clinical Podiatric Biomechanics and is due to complete his Masters degree later on this year. He has extensive experience in the sporting arena offering podiatry services to UK Athletics, English Institute of Sport, The Royal Ballet and the English National Ballet. He has lectured nationally and internationally on the concepts of podiatric biomechanics.

"Sports medicine, including musculoskeletal podiatry, is rapidly evolving in the UK making it a stimulating and dynamic place to practice. The role of the podiatrist in the sport injury environment is changing with large focus on movement analysis, not only in the foot but throughout the kinetic chain. In doing so, a close working relationship and integration of knowledge is required between sports physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists and exercise physiologists.

Every athlete, be it an elite performer or an occasional participant, is an individual and should be approached accordingly. Mechanisms of injury vary even though the diagnosis may be the same; making this an exciting and thought provoking profession to be involved in.

Technology plays an important role in the assessment of the athlete however I believe a sound knowledge base and excellent clinical skills are what underpins a successful outcome. Technology is an exceptionally useful adjunct to the assessment but it is only that. As such I am very fortunate enough to work with computerised gait analysis software, pressure measurement analysis and electromyography.

Outside of work, I am an avid follower of all sports and when time permits play golf, run and attend the gym. I am happily married to Jo, who herself is a very talented musculoskeletal physiotherapist."
