"Sports medicine services are not only for elite athletes"

John has worked in private practice, specialising in sports medicine, for 15 years. He has worked as medical director, team doctor and high performance consultant at the Australian Rugby Union for the past 12 years. During that time John was team doctor to the Wallabies - Australia's national rugby team - for over 80 matches, including their World Cup victory in 1999, and was 'Tournament Medical Officer' at the Rugby World Cup in 2003. Clinical interests in sports medicine include injury prevention and safety, rugby and golf injuries, and exercise prescription for the population at large.

"The attraction of working with elite athletes is the challenge to help an individual who may be outstanding to perform even better. But the combination of medicine and sport is not just for the elite. It's a positive and proactive way to promote health and well-being for every individual. Everything I learn from the advances in treating elite athletes helps me give better advice and treatment to individuals who practise recreational sports, or who are even just thinking about getting started. The elite athletes keep the field of sports medicine constantly on its toes, but the significance of the more far-reaching benefits for the general population, in terms of health and lifestyle, cannot be overestimated.

I appreciate people, in all their diversity, and I love finding out what makes each individual tick. Having a holistic view of the individual helps one to better understand their circumstances and set realistic and achievable goals. I also enjoy physical training and exercise, not least because they help me perform better in my job. People describe me as very calm, and I put this down to my (Christian) faith.

Apart from that, I am happily married to Megan and a proud father. I consider myself lucky to be able to say that my family is the greatest highlight in my life."
