Dr Craig Panther, Specialist Sports Doctor

“I enjoy working in elite sport and being part of a team striving to achieve success at the highest level. I also enjoy working with people who have simpler – but equally important – goals”

Craig has worked in private practice, specialising in sports and trauma medicine, for over 10 years.  In that time he has worked at private clinics in Auckland (New Zealand), and has been team doctor to Auckland City FC, Auckland University Rugby and the French America’s Cup teams. He is currently Medical Officer to Fulham Football Club.  His primary interests are wrist & hand, lower limb and compartment syndromes and has a keen interest in football, rugby and golf medicine.

“I became interested in the area of Sports Medicine early on in Medical School when the discipline was in its early days in New Zealand. After spending 3 months at the Australian Institute of Sport during my final year of studies, I knew it was the branch of medicine for me. After completing my Diploma in Sports Medicine in 1996 I then went on to gain additional qualifications in Emergency Medicine, which serves the area of pitchside treatment very well.

I enjoy working in elite sport and being part of a team striving to achieve success at the highest level. I also enjoy working with people who have simpler – but equally important – goals, such as continuing to play recreational sport, or running their first marathon.

The sports of particular interest to me are football, cricket and yachting, and I particularly enjoy treating injuries of the hand & wrist and of the lower limb.

Career highlights so far have been:

  • Working with New Zealand’s men’s football team

  • Winning back to back NZFC and subsequent Oceania titles with Auckland City FC

  • Representing Oceania with Auckland City in the 2006 FIFA World Club Championships in Japan

  • Opening day of the 2006-7 Premiership season with Fulham – 75000 people at Old Trafford

Away from work I am married to Helen, who is tremendously supportive, and together we are attempting to discover as much of the UK and Europe as we can during our (limited) spare time.”
