Chris Wilkes, Specialist Sports Osteopath

“My focus is to find the underlying cause of symptoms, work together with my patients to address these, and critically, to give them the tools to help prevent reoccurrence and ultimately enhance performance.”

Chris graduated with Distinction from the British School of Osteopathy in London.  Since qualifying he has completed post graduate studies in the USA, working with some of the worlds leading rehabilitation experts, and is one of only a handful of clinicians in the UK qualified in ‘Applied Functional Science’. He has a keen interest in functional biomechanics and, alongside his clinical experience, Chris has worked in a state of the art biomechanics lab performing kinematic and kinetic gait and cycling analysis.

Working as an Osteopath in private practice, Chris commonly deals with a wide range of patients. He regularly treats people suffering from chronic back and neck pain as well as more acute sports injuries such as muscle strains, ligament sprains and other joint injuries. His special areas of interest include knees, ankles and nerve root injuries. He has also worked with many elite athletes including international competitors across a variety of sports.

“Combining Osteopathic principles with modern rehabilitation techniques and an understanding of the demands of sports performance has given me a unique and exciting approach to injury prevention and rehabilitation. I enjoy working with anyone who has a desire to return from injury, enhance performance, or simply get out and enjoy the simple things in life!

I have personally experienced the frustration of being injured and being desperate to return to action as quickly as possible during my time as a professional rugby player. This has driven me to work hard at understanding how to make the rehabilitation process as efficient and effective as possible, but also to consider the development of athletes from an injury prevention perspective. I love to work closely with athletes and coaches to understand their goals and to integrate appropriate injury prevention and rehabilitation protocols into their preparation. This approach applies equally well to the weekend warrior or recreational sportsperson, where a thorough understanding of lifestyle, work commitments, and daily activities help us to work together and plan a sustainable program to address current injuries and prevent the new ones occurring.”

Outside of the clinic, Chris enjoys rugby (mostly touch rugby these days!), squash, swimming, and is even considering a return to the tennis court now he’s based full time at Raynes Park!
