Joint Pain and Arthritis

Joint pain and Arthritis are common medical problems seen by a Sports Medicine Specialist. Our Sports Doctors, Physiotherapists and Osteopaths work closely together to devise appropriate plans to treat, manage and prevent pain associated with these conditions.

There are several types of Arthritis, but broadly speaking these can be split into two categories, Osteoarthritis and Inflammatory Arthropies. Diagnosis for these Arthritis conditions can be made through a collection of signs and symptoms, and in some cases an X-ray or blood test, all of which can be organised by our Specialist Sports Doctors.

In the case of joint pain or Arthritis, there are many ways in which these conditions can be treated. Our Physiotherapists are able to help you find a way to keep mobile and strong, with the aim of protecting your joints. Further damage or pain can be caused in a joint when muscles weaken because of lack of use, and this can ultimately cause more pain.

Depending on the nature and extent of your condition, it is possible that a course of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be required in tandem with Physiotherapy treatment; to reduce joint inflammation and improve mobility. A program of exercises could also be prescribed to strengthen muscles around the joint and provide stability.

Ultimately we aim to educate our patients to a high level of understanding, so that they feel confident enough to self-manage their condition.
